Our focus has always been to produce quality livestock and livestock products while improving the environment in which we live.
We have progressively added tree lots, fenced to protect wetlands and other habitat areas. We have also constructed a major water storage to avoid the need to extract water from the Orara River for irrigation when both the need for irrigation for livestock needs and water flows in the river are at their greatest. Careful rotational grazing to prevent over utilization of preferred species and maintain ground cover is paramount. North coast pastures in our area depend largely on summer grasses, primarily Setaria, and Rhodes grass. Much less valuable Bahir and Giant Parramatta grass are always ready to take over at any opportunity. Wyn Cassia can be a small legume contributor on very light and unproductive soils. Having quality feed during winter depends heavily on winter grazing crops with white clover the only volunteer legume which can be present in the right year.. Our soils are light and typical of the area, heavily leached. are dominted by the Munbilla Established at Coutts Crossing near Grafton on the NSW Northern Rivers in 2004. The climate is subtropical and rainfall highly variable. Rainfall to this day in September 2023 is 372.6 mm over 87.0 days. To the same date in 2022 there had been 1460.6 mm over 143.0 days. Conditions can be very wet for long periods long periods which exaggerates any foot issues and leads to potential massive build up in Barbers Pole worm burdens. These conditions can be very challenging for Dorpers which were bred in arid and semi arid conditions in South Africa. Sustained, hot and dry conditions are also very common in the area and make producing dorpers very easy by comparison! |
